The Foundation to Survive
Quarter 1
Unit 1: Survival

From the universal experience of love and its many forms, we'll now shift our focus to the individual journey of transformation. We'll study how people change through their experiences, ultimately seeking to answer how we truly discover who we are. Building on our exploration of personal transformation, we'll now broaden our lens to consider how individuals and societies are shaped by external forces. We will study different media, focusing on how promises and progress are communicated, and examine how language motivates and creates change.

Unit 2: Promise & Progress

We will study different media focusing on promises and progress, determining a central idea of a text and analyzing its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details. We will examine how language is used to motivate and create change, writing routinely over extended time frames. Having examined how language in various media motivates and creates societal change, we will now turn our attention to a profoundly personal yet universal human experience. We will explore the complexities of love through various literary and informational texts, analyzing how they portray its nature and consequences.

Unit 5: The Things We Make

We will investigate the influence of both technology and nature on human existence, citing strong and thorough textual evidence to support our analysis from various informational texts. We will analyze how the author's ideas or claims are developed and refined by elements; and analyze in detail how an author's ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text (e.g., a section or chapter). We will consider the question of which force plays a more defining role in our lives, also analyzing the text structures an author uses to organize information, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas.
