Question 1: What are the key components of physical fitness and how can they help us live healthily?   

Question 2: What strategies can we use to refuse unhealthy behaviors and support our peers in making positive health choices?  

Kickstart Your Skills: A Journey into Movement and Teamwork!
Quarter 1

In physical education, we continue to build our motor skills and understand movement patterns. Through various game play we throw, catch, pass, dribble and receive with confidence.  As we engage in fun and interactive games, we discover how being physically active can lead to a healthier lifestyle and help us build teamwork skills. We learn important “5 components of fitness;” cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. We also discuss the “components of skill-related fitness;’ agility, coordination, power, reaction time, speed and balance, and how these relate to physical movement.   

We also discuss the importance of personal responsibility, including how to respect our surroundings and exhibit safe behaviors during physical activities.  We also discuss health and wellness together to learn about the different dimensions of health, including emotional, mental and physical well-being, and how they are all connected. As we engage in discussions, we identify healthy vs. unhealthy behaviors and understand the influences of our families, friends and community on our health choices.  By the end of this quarter, we feel more capable and confident in our physical abilities, practice making responsible choices, while also understanding the positive impacts of exercise on our overall well-being.

Building Connections: Strengthening Relationships Through Health and Fitness!
Quarter 2

In Quarter 2, we dive deeper as we learn about different types of physical activities and how each one can help our bodies stay strong and fit. We learn the FITT formula (Frequence, Intensity, Time, Type) and explore important concepts like aerobic and anaerobic exercise, understanding how to create a balanced fitness routine that includes both. We also discuss major muscle groups and bones of our bodies and how they relate to movement.  As we participate in various games and activities, we practice teamwork and cooperation while learning to respect the rules of each game. We work on defensive strategies, reducing space and practicing eye-hand coordination as we dribble and shoot.  

We also discuss how to manage stress through physical activity and share strategies for staying motivated to move. We focus on strong relationships and understanding the importance of self-esteem and positive self-concept. We practice effective communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, to help us express our feelings and face challenges together.  By the end of this quarter, we appreciate how staying active is not only good for our bodies but also brings us joy and helps us make friends!

Fit for Life: Energizing Our Bodies and Minds Through Health!
Quarter 3

In Quarter 3, we focus on demonstrating our motor skills and movement patterns while pursuing activities that promote lifelong fitness. Together, we learn how to perform different techniques, such as serving, striking, and volleying in various games. We practice these skills in both individual and team settings, which help us understand the importance of teamwork and communication.   

As we engage in fun and challenging activities, we also discuss how to stay safe and make smart choices during physical activity. Additionally, we explore ways to enjoy being active outside of school and how to create our own fitness plans.  As we continue learning about the components of fitness and skills, we learn how they contribute to our overall health, disease prevention, and keeping us strong. As we explore nutrition, we discover how the food we eat provides energy and nutrients for growth and development. By the end of this quarter, we feel more confident in our abilities and feel empowered to set personal health goals and practice healthy habits that will benefit us for a lifetime!

Stay Strong: Empowering Choices for a Healthier Future!
Quarter 4

In Quarter 4, we celebrate our journey in physical education by focusing on mastering various motor skills plus enjoying dance and rhythm activities. We also practice important skills like throwing, catching, and striking in games that require teamwork and strategy. As we participate in these activities, we discuss how to identify open spaces and make smart plays during games. Our focus is on having fun, expressing ourselves through movement, and understanding how physical activity contributes to our overall health and happiness.  

Together, we learn how to protect ourselves and make safe choices in various situations. We discuss the effects of substances on our bodies and minds and explore the pressures that can lead to their use. We also practice refusal skills that help us say no to unhealthy behaviors and learn how to deal with emergencies effectively. As we work on understanding these important topics, we build our confidence in making healthy decisions and advocating for our own well-being. By the end of this quarter, we feel proud of our progress and ready to continue being active and healthy in our everyday lives!
