1st Grade Social Studies Course
How do people in a community work together to make it a better place?
We will discover what it means to be part of our community. Together, we will talk about how our school and neighborhoods work. We will think about how we can be good friends and help one another. We will also share stories about our favorite places and the people who make them special. As we learn about being good community members, we will find out how we can make our community a better place for everyone!

Next, we will celebrate the wonderful differences in our cultures. Together, we will share stories about our families and the traditions that are special to us. We will look at pictures and listen to music from different places. As we talk about American symbols and holidays, we will discover how our values make us unique and how they connect us to each other. By sharing and listening, we will build a stronger community filled with understanding and respect for everyone!

We then go on a fun journey using maps and our community! Together, we will discover how maps tell stories about where we live. We will look at pictures of our favorite places and even make our own maps of our classroom and neighborhoods. As we compare how things have changed over time, we will also find out what makes Arizona special. By using our imaginations and creative thinking, we will see how maps help us understand the world around us!

Last, we will look back at our past to see how it shapes our lives today. Together, we will think about important events and people in our community who have made a difference. We will share stories about our families and how they connect to our history. As we talk about the changes over time, we will understand why it’s important to remember our past. By learning from those who came before us, we will discover how we can make our world better today!
