Essential Question for the Year

How have interactions between different civilizations throughout history helped shape the modern world we live in today?

Foundations of Civilization
Quarter 1

We will explore the histories of ancient civilizations and their impact on our world today. We will learn about the rich cultures of Asia and the Americas, including the Aztec, Maya, and Inca peoples. Together, we will investigate how trade routes like the Silk Road and the trans-Saharan trade route connected different societies, allowing for the exchange of goods, ideas, and beliefs. We will also celebrate the diversity of the African continent and discuss how the beliefs and customs of its people have shaped their societies.

Transformations in Society
Quarter 2

We will then dive into the important stories of how nations and cultures have shaped our world. We will explore the Islamic Golden Age and the impact of the Crusades, as well as learn about the rise of European monarchies and their exploration of new lands. Together, we will examine the Industrial Revolution, discussing how it changed daily life and affected our environment. We will also investigate the ideas of the Enlightenment and how they influenced societies around the globe, both positively and negatively.

Struggles for Identity
Quarter 3

Next, we will explore the powerful stories of imperialism, independence, and the world wars. We will learn how countries around the world, including Africa, Asia, and Europe, faced challenges during times of imperialism and how these struggles shaped their identities. Together, we will dive into the events of World War I and World War II, discussing their causes and impacts on different nations. We will also investigate the revolutions in Mexico, China, and Russia to understand what made these events truly revolutionary.

Modern Challenges
Quarter 4

Last, we will study the important events and movements that have shaped our world after World War II. We will learn about the Cold War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. We will dive into the rise of globalism and how scientific and technological advancements continue to influence our lives today. We will also investigate serious issues like climate change and human trafficking, discussing their impact on communities and the world.
