Topic: Classification of Matter
Science Objectives: Students will be able to:

  • determine the number of atoms in a molecule by reading a chemical formula.
  • classify matter as a pure substance or a mixture based on particle representation or using chemical formulas.
  • classify pure substances as elements or compounds based on particle representations or using chemical formulas.


Matter: any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.
Pure Substance: a sample of matter with both definite and constant composition and distinct chemical properties. 
Element: a substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons: another way of saying this is that all of a particular element's atoms have the same atomic number.
Compound: any substance consisting of two or more different types of atoms (chemical elements).

Mixture: a material made up of two or more different substances that are physically combined.
Homogenous Mixture: is a solid, liquid, or gaseous mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout any given sample (uniform throughout).
Heterogeneous Mixture: is a solid, liquid, or gaseous mixture that has unequal proportions of its components throughout the sample.
