Performing Arts
All programs begin with fundamentals and technique progressing to multiple experiences in performing, composition/writing, conducting/directing, and technology applications.
Expanded skill development emphasizes independence in technique, reading, interpretation, solo and ensemble performance and composition.
Through an introduction to varied literature and interpretation, students expand the depth and breadth of connections between content, concepts, and real-world applications.
Along with fostering a generations-spanning community of instrumentalists, our band programs help fine tune students' technical skills, musicianship, and critical thinking while developing ensemble playing. Expanded application of skills acquired in band emphasize independence in technique, interpretation, performance and composition.
Students in elementary school learn that the correct playing position, breathing, and fingering is the foundation of learning to play a band instrument. From the sound fundamentals, we progress into working with musical concepts, technique, performance situations, and more developed literature.
By tackling ambitious and significant musical projects, students in our choral programs learn individual and ensemble concepts by using diverse vocal techniques in a collaborative environment. As students develop performance practices, they establish connections between musical ideas and vocal technique.
Our Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) program provides many creative dance integration experiences at our district’s elementary schools.
Folklorico, modern, jazz, and ballet classes are offered at some of our high schools. Master classes from visiting professional dancers are an integral part of these programs and are highly encouraged.
Drama programs in TUSD’s high schools allow students to excel in the skills of public speaking, improvisation, stage presence, and technical aspects of the theatre.
In our elementary schools, creative drama is introduced and integrated through the OMA program. The transferable skills learned in these programs prepare students for the new conceptual age of creativity in the collaborative workplace, making the art form simply invaluable.
Our orchestra programs create musicians who form lifelong engagement with symphonic music. Students develop their technical skills, interpretation of universal themes, and the concept of solo and ensemble performance. Musicians are born through the disciplines of technique, reading, interpretation, performance, and composition.
