6th Grade Science Course

Essential Question for the Year

How do energy, matter, and forces interact within ecosystems and the universe to connect living and non-living things, and how can we model and understand these interactions?

Eco-Explorers: Uncovering the Flow of Energy and Matter in Nature!
Quarter 1
Module 1: Matter and Energy in Ecosystems, Module 2: Dynamic Ecosystems, Module 3: Biodiversity in Ecosystems

We are eco-explorers and will investigate how energy flows through nature by learning about producers (plants), consumers (animals), and decomposers (fungi and bacteria). We’ll build models to show how matter cycles between living things and the environment, discovering how atoms are reused in nature. Through analyzing data, we’ll see how plants and animals depend on each other and their surroundings to survive. We'll also discuss how factors like food and water impact the growth of organisms. By the end, we will understand how energy and matter connect all living things in ecosystems.

Cosmic Explorers: Unveiling the Secrets of Earth, Moon, and Stars!
Quarter 2
Module 1: The Sun-Earth-Moon System, Module 2: Exploring the Universe

We are space explorers, uncovering the mysteries of Earth's motion and the changing seasons! We’ll use models to learn how Earth's rotation, revolution, and tilted axis create day and night, the seasons, and how we see the Sun, Moon, and stars. We'll also dive into the phases of the Moon, understanding how its movement creates the familiar lunar cycle. Lastly, we'll explore the wonders of solar and lunar eclipses, building models to show how Earth's and the Moon's movements create these exciting celestial events. It's a fun journey into understanding our place in the universe!

Journey into Nature: Unraveling the Magic of Energy and Matter!
Quarter 3
Module 1: Energy and Matter, Module 2: Classifications and States of Matter

We are a group of young scientists on an adventure to uncover the mysteries of energy and matter! We conduct experiments to discover how energy, mass, and temperature are connected by observing how particles move in solids, liquids, and gases. Using models, we understand these changes better.

Our journey then takes us into ecosystems, where we explore how energy flows from plants to animals and decomposers. We create models to show how matter cycles between living and nonliving things. Along the way, we discover that atoms are never lost, constantly cycling through nature in an endless loop. We see how energy and matter connect all life around us!

Energy Detectives: Unlocking the Secrets of Motion and Force!
Quarter 4
Module 2: Mechanical Energy

Lastly, we are energy detectives, investigating how kinetic energy is related to mass and speed by gathering and analyzing data. We'll also explore how an object’s potential energy changes based on its mass and distance from Earth, comparing different objects using models. As we dive deeper, we’ll learn about the conservation of energy and how forces can transfer energy. Through hands-on activities, we’ll use models and observe patterns to understand how energy is transferred through work. It’s a fun, interactive way to discover the science of energy!
