2023 EDI Student Summit

Last month, the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusiveness (EDI) Department hosted the second annual EDI Student Summit. This year, Sabino High School served as host.

Along with the entire student body of Sabino – a perk of serving as host school – students from Catalina High School, Cholla High School, Palo Verde High School, Pueblo High School, Rincon High School, Sahuaro High School and Tucson High School attended.

In total, approximately 1,000 students were able to attend the day-long conference.

Upon arriving, students were treated to conference swag and led to the auditorium where the opening ceremony took place. Afterwards, students took part in workshops and a resource fair geared at helping students. The workshops revolved around equitable and diverse topics, such as Youth Activism: Seeking Equity in our Communities; Reclaiming the Humanity of Students; Corridos: The Voice of La Raza Xicana Mexicana; and more.

At the end of the day, students were treated to a concert by up-and-coming rapper and singer charlieonnafriday.

The purpose of the conference is to create safe spaces where students engage in diverse conversations and learn how to move forward in life in the most equitable way. Tucson Unified hopes help empower its students to be able to contribute back to the community.
